Product Insights

Red Chile Seasoned Pecans from The Fresh Chile Company are a savory, crunchy New Mexico regional gift that pairs the state's two signature crops — pecans grown by Salopek Orchards, a Mesilla Valley family farm, and Hatch red chile — in a four-ingredient, oil-coated roast (no frying) that keeps whole halves fresh and dry. The core promise is a versatile, snackable nut: buyers find them hard to stop eating, even self-described non-pecan eaters, and use them as a snack, salad topper, or dessert garnish with no extra toasting. The main tradeoff is a mild, sometimes bland heat (rated about 2–3 on a 10-point scale) and under-salted flavor (280 mg sodium per 30g serving), so while the chile coating is well applied, the taste leans subtle rather than punchy. At $5.95 for a 4oz pouch (about 3.5 servings of 12 pieces, roughly $1.70 per serving), the package is easy to finish in one sitting, delivering about 1g of sodium if eaten whole; storage is simple, and refrigerating or freezing after opening extends the shelf life past six months, making it a practical, giftable treat that balances regional authenticity with a gentle, approachable flavor profile.

Verified claims

Grower
Grown by Salopek Orchards, a Mesilla Valley family farm of about 8,000 acres.
Terroir
The Mesilla Valley holds about 70% of New Mexico's pecan acreage.
Ingredients
Four ingredients only: pecans, soy oil, New Mexico Hatch red chile, and salt.
Regional identity
Chile-dusted pecans are a popular New Mexico gift that pairs the state's two signature crops.
Heat level
Buyers rate the heat about 2–3 on a 1–10 scale — mild, sometimes bland.
Gifting appeal
Buyers give these as New Mexico regional gifts and recipients love the fresh Hatch flavor.
Flavor
Buyers report the nuts are well coated but still taste somewhat bland
Serving size
A 4 oz pouch is about 3.5 servings of 12 pieces (30 g)
Usage
Recommended as a snack, on salads, or chopped over dessert
Salt balance
Buyers call it under-salted; a 30 g serving has 280 mg sodium.
Snackability
Buyers report these are hard to stop eating — even self-described non-pecan eaters like them.
Crunch
Whole pecan halves keep a fresh, dry crunch under the chile coating, not a greasy fry.
Gift uses
The pouch works as a snack, salad topper, or dessert garnish, and pairs with chile sauces for a New Mexico snack board.
Provenance
Pecans trace to Salopek Orchards, a 50-year Mesilla Valley family farm.
Culinary uses
Serves as a snack, salad topper, or dessert garnish — no extra toasting needed.
Portion size
A 4 oz bag is about 3.5 servings of 12 pieces; a reviewer reports finishing an 8 oz bag in one sitting.
Storage
Keeps in a cool pantry; refrigerating or freezing after opening extends life past six months.
Sugar
Per 30g serving: 1g sugar, no added sugar — a savory roast, not a candied nut.
Cost per serving
At $5.95, the 4oz pouch breaks down to about $1.70 per 12-piece serving.
Coating method
Nuts are oil-coated, not fried; soy oil binds the chile dust onto each half.
Bag size
Buyers report eating the 4 oz in one sitting; the 8 oz fits a movie night and the 16 oz a group.
Sodium
Eating a whole 4 oz pouch means about 1g of sodium (280mg per 30g serving).

No heat, but good tasting pecans

We loved the pecans but were expecting hot pecans since they had red chili on it. Was disappointed in the lack of spice.

Love the flavor!

A little disappointed

While they seemed to be coated fairly well there really wasn't a lot of flavor. Somewhat bland. They would be great for someone who is heat/spice averse.

These are a unique product. Perfect level of spiciness. Only problem is that once you start eating them you can't stop

Unfortunately, many of the Chile's fell off during transit. It's a very fragile wreath. It is really pretty though.

My lovely bride finished off an 8oz bag in a short period of time. Not disclosing how short because that would be like kissing and telling. The one nut that I was able to sneak was pretty darn good!

This is good but more heat and some salt would make it better. I had to add some habanero salt to my pecans.

I bought the 16 oz. package as a 2020 Christmas gift for my parents. They loved them - thought these red chile pecans tasted wonderful - had a great red chile flavor. I also bought for them the green chile pecans, sweet and hot pecans, praline pecans, red chile pistachios and green chile pistachios. They very much enjoyed all of them but were not sure if they liked the green or red versions better. I plan to buy these again - hopefully for myself this time...

Yum! So good. Almost better then pinions. Mom and dad had pecan trees in their yard in Carlsbad and we always devoured the pecans even without red chile seasoning. Me and my kids would go get pinions off the ground when we lived in NM.
